Visiting Laem Chabang Cruise Port: What to Expect & Tips for Exploring
Laem Chabang, Thailand’s largest deep-sea port, might not sound like a dreamy cruise destination — but it’s the main cruise terminal for visiting Bangkok and Pattaya. If your ship docks here, here’s what you need to know before stepping ashore.
Where is Laem Chabang?
Located in Chonburi province, Laem Chabang sits:
-
📍 Around 2 hours from Bangkok
-
📍 About 50 minutes from Pattaya
While the port is functional and well-organized, it’s primarily a commercial cargo hub for container ships. As a result, the surrounding area is dominated by trucks, industrial buildings, and limited tourist infrastructure. It’s not exactly a place to just wander around on foot.
Our Experience
When we docked at Laem Chabang, we considered visiting an island near Pattaya, which would have involved:
-
🚗 50-minute car ride
-
⛴️ 1-hour boat transfer (each way)
Ultimately, we decided to stay on board. Between the time-consuming logistics and gloomy weather, it just didn’t feel worth it — and we were happy to catch up on some work instead.

Transport Tips
Although Grab (ride-hailing app) is technically available in the area, we had no luck finding a driver upon disembarkation. Taxis were available, but without a pre-arranged ride, you might find yourself waiting or overpaying.
💡 Tip:
➡️ Book transportation in advance
➡️ Consider joining an organized shore excursion or hiring a local guide
➡️ If you want to go independently, arrange a private driver with a reliable company
